Moonbin, singer with South Korean boy band Astro, dead at 25

SEOUL, South Korea — Moonbin, a member of the South Korean K-pop band Astro, was found dead at his home on Wednesday. He was 25.

The death of the singer-actor, who was born Moon Bin, was confirmed by Astro’s record label, Fantagio Music, in a statement posted to social media in Korean, People reported. TMZ also reported the singer’s death.

“On April 19, ASTRO member Moon Bin suddenly left us and became a star in the sky,” the note read. The record label added that the company was “deeply mourning the deceased in such great sadness and shock.”

Details surrounding Moobin’s death are unclear. He was the older brother of Moon Sua, part of the popular K-pop girl group Billie, according to Entertainment Tonight.

Moonbin’s body was found by his manager at approximately 8:10 p.m. local time Wednesday at his apartment in Seoul, Deadline reported. His manager immediately called the police, according to the Seoul Gangnam Police Station.

“It appears that Moonbin took his own life,” Seoul police said in a statement published by Yonhap News, according to People. “We are currently discussing the possibility of an autopsy to determine the precise cause of death.”

Astro debuted in 2016 to rave reviews, Entertainment Tonight reported. Billboard called the group a “K-pop boy band to watch” after the release of their “Summer Vibes: 2nd Mini Album EP.”

The group released its third album, “Drive to the Starry Road,” in May 2022, according to New Musical Express.

Born Moon Bin in Cheongju, Chungbuk Province in South Korea, Moonbin began his career as a child model in 2004, Deadline reported. He appeared in a “Balloons” music video in 2006 by the band TVXQ and made his acting debut three years later in “Boys Over Flowers,” a Korean television drama series, the entertainment news website reported.

He also appeared in the 2019 television series “At Eighteen,” according to Deadline.

According to Fantagio Music, Moonbin’s family will hold a private funeral, TMZ reported.
